Why do I need the serial number to auto-provision my Grandstream Handset?

You may now see on the dashboard of your account that when you go to add a Grandstream handset to your list of auto-provisioned devices, we now require you to enter the Serial Number / Machine ID of the device.

This is due to Grandstream discontinuing the GAPS auto-provisioning service (what was previously in-use), and migrating accounts over to GDMS - this comes with two main advantages vs their old legacy system:

1. Modern Two-Way Security & Encryption:

GAPS was a basic, one-way redirection tool for older firmware. GDMS is a modern, enterprise-grade cloud management system that allows full remote control, diagnostics, and credential management.

Because it handles sensitive network data, GDMS pairs the MAC address and Serial Number together as a unique cryptographic handshake to establish two-way certificate verification. If the pair doesn't match perfectly, GDMS rejects the device to keep your system secure.

2. Ownership Piracy Prevention:

GDMS ensures "serial number authentication of devices to ensure private rights of devices". It proves you have physical custody of the device or access to its packaging, reducing risk of your device digitally falling into the wrong hands.
