What is VoIP?

A lot of people talk about VoIP and virtual phone numbers, but what actually is it? What are the benefits and why should you use it?

VoIP Overview

Ok, so just what is VoIP?

VoIP is the abbreviation of 'Voice Over Internet Protocol'. In simple terms it is a technology that allows you to make and receive calls using your internet connection.

Business grade VoIP systems such as Yay should not be confused with consumer grade services like Skype. Business VoIP is a high quality, reliable and feature rich service that older telephone systems cannot compete with and is now a necessity for any growing business.

How Does VoIP Work?

Rather than using a traditional phone line to make calls over a public telephone network, VoIP converts your analogue voice into digital data packets and then sends this over the internet.

That means that you no longer need a separate phone line to make phone calls. They can all be sent over your broadband internet connection.

Benefits of VoIP

  • Make calls from anywhere with an internet connection

  • Reduced cost of calls, equipment, lines and maintenance

  • Easily integrates with smartphones and computers

  • Excellent voice call quality

  • Easily add users, numbers and extensions

  • Allows features such as Call Recording, Voicemail, Call Monitoring, Call Forwarding

  • Intuitive online portal for easy management at any time

  • Take your business lines with you whatever your location

What do I need to use VoIP?

VoIP Provider

You will need a VoIP provider in order to make and receive calls. Your VoIP service will provide you with SIP details and a phone number in order to send calls over the internet.

Internet Connection

You will need an internet connection to be able to make and receive VoIP calls. Make sure you have a reliable router to enable you to connect to the internet.

VoIP Phone Numbers

You will need a phone number for your voice calls. Either pick the perfect local or non- geographic number, or transfer your existing phone number in to us today.

VoIP Phones

A VoIP phone connects directly to your router and allows you to make and receive calls like a standard handset. With an analogue adaptor you can connect an existing analogue phone to the internet.

VoIP Apps

If you don’t want to buy new hardware to make calls you can use a VoIP softphone on your smartphone or computer instead. A VoIP app on your smartphone allows you to make and receive calls wherever you go.
