How well does VoIP work over a mobile network and will the call quality be good?

We don't recommend using VoIP over your mobile phone network. It is possible and increasingly better quality when using a strong 3G signal or a 4G network operator, but we don't recommend it.

VoIP data is carried using TCP/IP packets, the foundation of the Internet and data networks. TCP/IP stands for Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. The first part (TCP) is essentially the controller part, putting the data packets in the right order at each end where they are sent and received. The second part (IP) are the actual data packets themselves. This is where problems start when using mobile networks. Data packets on a mobile network are sent through the air and often over a great distance to the nearest phone mast. They aren't being sent over a wired cable; like a broadband connection or Wifi would be.

That distance often creates what we call latency and packets may start to be received at both the mast and mobile phone in a different order to which they are received. So the TCP part finds it hard to reassemble the IP part to have it all make sense. That's what happens when voice calls can become robotic on both a regular mobile phone call and on a business grade VoIP network like ours - a similar problem in both cases. It won't be something your call will suffer from on a regular hard wired broadband or WiFI network; just as your regular home/business phone won't suffer like a mobile phone call can. On a mobile network, we have a lot less control of your phone signal/strength and the network operators ability to assemble your data packets in the right order and a timely fashion. The issue is non existent on a fixed network, such as your business/home broadband and/or most public WiFi networks.
