Why is my SIP device failing to register?

There are instances where you are provisioning a device (either manually or via auto-provisioning) and all the details of the SIP user and server are correct, but the registration of that device is simply failing.

Below are a few things you can try/check to help register your device!

Transport Type:

On certain networks, devices are not able to provision on certain transport types, and may need to be changed.

A majority of cases where transport type is the issue, you can change the transport type to TLS and get the device registered.

Just remember, when changing the transport type to TLS, you also need to change the server port from 5060 to 5061, and also ensure that sRTP Encryption is on and, if possible, set to compulsory/forced.

If TLS does not work, feel free to try the UDP or TCP just to be sure any of these do not allow the device to register.

Server Address:

By default, an auto-provisioned device will have talk.yay.com as the server address for the SIP user. Sometimes this address in domain form is not accepted, so we can replace this with the IP Address of the domain instead.

Open up the command prompt on your computer, and type in “ping talk.yay.com”. This will both check that your network is able to ping the domain, but also display the IP address of the domain as well. Please copy this IP address into the server address field and try registering once more.

SIP Trunks:

If you have a SIP trunk set up anywhere on Yay.com, and the public IP address your SIP devices are connected to is being used in that SIP trunk as an authorised IP address, the SIP devices will fail to register.

Please remove your IP address from this SIP trunk and the devices should register fine!

Firewall Rules:

Please ensure the Yay.com firewall rules (click here) have been applied to your network, to ensure SIP registrations being made to our servers are not being blocked by the firewall.

Diagnostics:

If all else fails, it is advised that you run a Packet Capture on either the device or your network when the SIP device is trying to register, and check this packet capture with your IT team (or yourself with something like WireShark) to check where the registration attempts are failing.
